Glossary of Fireworks Terms
Fountain: low-level firework (max height: 8 ft.); emits a continuous shower of sparks, providing a 'volcano' or 'reverse-waterfall' effect
Roman Candle: traditional firework item shoots flaming stars or balls (one shot at a time) into the sky; various heights and effects available
Brazilian Firework: single-shot firework; launches a shell high (e.g., 80-100 ft.) into the sky, resulting in a brilliant comet or floral effect, often with loud aerial detonation
Sound Shell: small single-shot firework; sends up a shell which bursts at 30-50 ft. with a very loud aerial detonation
Barrage: spectacular, longlasting (35-50 second) firework; shoots a constant stream of stars into the sky; stars often have 'streamers' or tails & sometimes have secondary effects such as popping flowers or spinning whistles at maximum height
Multi-Effect: single-shot mortar tube with standing base; fires a shell that bursts into the sky in a floral, comet, or minefield pattern, often with secondary incendiary effects; floral bursts are common pieces in large fireworks displays
Multi-Shot Cake: multi-tubed firework which is often used as a finale piece in displays; shoots a combination of 7 or more different shots (one at a time) with spectacular effects
Wheel: longlasting (45-90 second) firework which is affixed to a post, fence or tree and spins on a center hub, spraying a colourful shower of sparks as it turns; often includes a loud whistle
Sparkler: hand-held sparkling wand or stick; emits bright gold sparkles as it burns; lasts from 45-120 seconds
Novelty: category of items includes Smoke Grenades, Glow Necklaces & Glow Sticks, Bomb Bags, Smell Bombs, Igniter Sticks, etc.
